Freedom to Write is a movement dedicated toward creating and supporting Free and Open Source software solutions for the writing industry. We dream of a world where all writers can publish their work without having to rely on proprietary software.
But it's not just about writers.
- Publishers need non-proprietary options to help them run their businesses. It starts with online submission systems and continues all the way up to platforms to help format and release finished works. This also helps lower the barrier for new publishers to enter the industry!
- Editors, we believe, can best improve authors' work when working in an openly-developed environment. We hope to provide tools to help the editing workflow and provide open standards to help the development of future tooling.
- Readers are who the writing industry revolves around. We aim to keep those readers in mind in every step of the process. For example, Freedom to Write's inaugural project, readable.css, aims to ease the creation of websites (like this one) that are accessible and respectful of user preferences while remaining aesthetically pleasing.
